On popularity

June 30, 2009

As I read an article on popularity and circulation, I cannot help but think to a time before I knew the plot details of Twilight.  Can anyone else remember that far back?  People were calling it “the next Harry Potter.”

I wish someone would go back and chart its popularity before and after it received that soundbite.  I might even think of doing it myself, if not for all these articles I’m supposed to be reading right now.

I don’t think I had heard of Twilight before people were saying it’s the next HP. And to be honest, that’s some of the reason why I avoided it like the plague.

My issue was that they used that expression to discuss popularity, but a lot of parents took it mean that it was on the same level of, uh, sexlessness, which Twilight is very much NOT. So you had a lot of twelve-year-olds reading it far before they should have.

      Whatever “should” is.
